Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin athlotheta; Greek ἀθλοθέτης.
Etymology: In α. forms < post-classical Latin athlotheta (1495 or earlier) < ancient Greek ἀθλοθέτης (see below). Compare French athlothète (1598 in Middle French as athlothete ). In β. forms directly < ancient Greek ἀθλοθέτης judge or steward in the games, who awards the prizes < either ἆθλος contest or ἆθλον prize (see athlete n.) + -θέτης (see nomothetes n.). Compare post-classical Latin athlothetes (1526 or earlier).It is unclear whether the following example shows the English word or the Latin word in an English context:1688 P. Pett Happy Future State of Eng. 217 One who hath striven per omnem ætatem, cum coævis, and hath to the Athlotletæ [read Athlothetæ] given proof of his valour from his youth, and who hath at least in tribus agonibus been Conqueror.
