释义 | Lord Mayorn. 1. (A title of) the head of the municipal government of London, Dublin, York, or (in later use) any of several other major cities. Esp. in earlier use preceded by a possessive adjective (usually my) as a form of address. See mayor n. 2.In the United Kingdom (excluding Scotland) and Ireland the role of Lord Mayor is purely ceremonial. The office dates from 1189 in London, 1229 in Dublin, and 1217 in York, though in earlier use the title was simply Mayor. In Australia, the only other Commonwealth country where the title Lord Mayor is widely used, the office is granted by the British monarch.In Scotland the corresponding position is Lord Provost (see provost n. 6a).
