Etymology: < lord n. + mayor n.

Esp. in earlier use preceded by a possessive adjective (usually my) as a form of address. See mayor n. 2.In the United Kingdom (excluding Scotland) and Ireland the role of Lord Mayor is purely ceremonial. The office dates from 1189 in London, 1229 in Dublin, and 1217 in York, though in earlier use the title was simply Mayor.
