Etymology: In sense 1 originally < French longuette (1740 or earlier in sense 1b, 1753 or earlier in sense 1a), probably < long long adj.¹ + -ette -ette suffix. In later use in this sense frequently after German Longuette (1763 or earlier in sense 1a, 1782 or earlier in sense 1b; < French). In sense 2 < French longuette, adjective (1967 or earlier designating items of clothing, e.g. jupe longuette longish skirt), feminine form of longuet somewhat long, longish (12th cent. in Old French) < long long adj.¹ + -et -et suffix¹; compare -ette suffix.With sense 2 compare also French longuette, noun (1971 or earlier; < English).
