Origin: A borrowing from early Scandinavian. Etymon: Norse lófe.
Etymology: < Old Norse lófe weak masculine = Gothic lōfa; related by ablaut to Old High German laffa blade of an oar, Old Church Slavonic (Polish, Russian) lapa paw, Latvian lēpa paw.
Scottish and northern dialect.
