The retreat of Chinese Communist forces from Kuomintang (Nationalist) troops in 1934–5 from south-eastern to north-western China, over a distance of 6000 miles (c. 9600 km). Now historical.At the outset, 100,000 people left the Communist rural base in Jiangxi Province in October 1934; approx. 20,000 survived to reach Shaanxi Province in October 1935 under the leadership of Mao Zedong. Despite these losses, the retreat ensured the survival of the Communists and made possible their ultimate victory over the Kuomintang in 1949.
