Origin: A borrowing from Hebrew. Etymon: Hebrew 'āḇīḇ.

Etymology: Originally < Hebrew 'āḇīḇ (in ḥodeš ha-'āḇīḇ month in which the young ears of barley are formed, i.e. month of beginning of spring (Exodus 13:4, etc.) < ḥodeš month + ha- the + 'āḇīḇ young ear of barley (Exodus 9:31)). In later use partly < post-biblical Hebrew 'āḇīḇ (see note).In the Old Testament and Hebrew Scriptures, the month is always called ḥodeš ha-'āḇīḇ ; the independent use of 'āḇīḇ to denote the month is post-biblical. In Exodus 13:4, the Wycliffite Bible has moneth of new fruytis , rendering post-classical Latin mense novarum frugum (Vulgate), itself after Hellenistic Greek ἐν μηνὶ τῶν νέων (Septuagint). Compare German Abib (1522 in Luther's translation of the Bible, in Exodus 13:4, etc.). The β. forms reflect the pronunciation of the Hebrew etymon, in which both instances of the letter bēṯ are spelt without a dagesh, and therefore pronounced as fricatives rather than plosives.
