Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French autogestion.
Etymology: < French autogestion (1960), lit. ‘self-management’ < auto- auto- comb. form1 + gestion management (see gestion n.).
Originally Politics.
A socialist system in which workers have authority in political and economic decision-making, and hold ultimate responsibility in the workplace, as opposed to state-run socialism. Now also more generally: the relinquishment of managerial responsibilities to the employees in a workplace. The system was first advocated by the French Partie Socialite Unifié in the early 1960s and briefly adopted in Algeria after independence from France in 1962.
