Etymology: < Byzantine Greek αὐτόγονος self-produced ( < ancient Greek αὐτο- auto- comb. form¹ + -γονος < an ablaut variant (o -grade) of the Indo-European base of ancient Greek γίγνεσθαι to be born: see genesis n.) + -y suffix³, after German Autogonie ( Haeckel Generelle Morphologie der Organismen (1866) I. vi. 169).
