Etymology: < post-classical Latin locum tenens person who holds the place of another, substitute, deputy (frequently from 13th cent. in British and continental sources) < classical Latin locum , accusative of locus place (see locus n.1) + tenēns , present participle of tenēre to hold (see tenent adj.). Compare earlier locum tenent n., and also earlier lieutenant n. N.E.D. (1903) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (lōu·kɒ̆m tī·nenz) /ˈləʊkəm ˈtiːnɛnz/.
