Etymology: < (i) Middle French longanimité (French longanimité ) patience (end of the 12th cent. in Old French as longanimiteit , earliest in the specific sense ‘patience under provocation’), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin longanimitat-, longanimitas patience, forbearance (Vulgate, e.g. 2 Peter 3:15), length (6th cent.) < longanimis , longanimus (see longanimous adj.) + classical Latin -tās (see -ty suffix1; compare -ity suffix) after Hellenistic Greek μακροθυμία. Compare Spanish longanimidad (a1428), Portuguese longanimidade (15th cent.), Italian longanimità (a1292).In sense 3 perhaps by association with classical Latin anima breath (see anima n.); compare long-windedness n. at long-winded adj. Derivatives.
1. Patience, forbearance, esp. under provocation; long-sufferance. Formerly also: †foresight, long-sightedness; confidence in the future (obsolete).In early use chiefly in religious contexts.
