Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin lordosis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin lordosis curvature of the spine, producing convexity in front (1513 or earlier) < ancient Greek λόρδωσις < λορδοῦν to bend backward ( < λορδός bent backward, further etymology uncertain) + -σις -sis suffix.Ancient Greek λορδός has no surviving clear cognates, but it has been suggested that it is ultimately < an ablaut variant of the same Indo-European base as Middle High German lerz left (compare discussion at belirt v.).
1. Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. Originally: abnormal curvature of the spine resulting in a convexity which is forward-facing (in a person) or downward-facing (in a quadruped); the condition of having such curvature; an instance of such curvature. In later use also: a slight degree of such curvature occurring normally, esp. in the lumbar and cervical parts of the human spine.Abnormal lordosis often called swayback, esp. in horses.
