Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; partly modelled on a Latin lexical item, and partly modelled on a Greek lexical item. Etymons: lord n., day n.
Etymology: < the genitive of lord n. + day n., after post-classical Latin dies Dominicus (early 3rd cent. in Tertullian), dies Dominica (Vulgate: Revelation 1:10) and their model Hellenistic Greek ἡ κυριακὴ ἡμέρα (New Testament: Revelation 1:10). Compare (after the Latin phrase) German frōntag , Old Icelandic dróttinsdagr , and also Old English dryhtenlic dæg , all in sense ‘Sunday’ (with the last two compare drightin n. and drightlike adj. at drightin n. Derivatives). Compare slightly earlier Sunday n. and see also the note at week n. 1a.Compare also Anglo-Norman and Old French diemaine , diemenche (12th cent.; Middle French, French dimanche ), Old Occitan dimenge , Catalan diumenge (14th cent.), Spanish domingo (12th cent.), Italian domenica (13th cent.), and also Early Irish domnach (Irish Domhnach ), all in sense ‘Sunday’ (all < post-classical Latin Dominica , noun (6th cent.; short for dies Dominica )).
