Etymology: Of uncertain origin, perhaps < lutch v. or an alteration of latchet n.
Nautical.
A fitting on the deck of a sailing vessel (esp. a barge or wherry) to which the foot of the mast is pivoted so that it may be lowered when passing under a bridge, etc. Cf. tabernacle n. 7. Now chiefly dialect (Yorkshire).
