Etymology: < Hindi loṭā.The form loto may reflect a cognate in another Indian language; compare e.g. Rajasthani loṭo. The oo in early forms is difficult to explain; it may be intended to represent the length of the /oː/ in Hindi.

Esp. in South Asia: a small vessel, typically spherical and made of brass or copper, used esp. to store or carry water for washing oneself or for ritual purification.
