单词 lotman
释义

lotmann.

Brit. /ˈlɒtmən/, U.S. /ˈlɑtmən/
Inflections: Plural lotmen.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: lot n., man n.1
Etymology: < lot n. + man n.1The sense ‘an alleged synonym for pirate’ given in N.E.D. (1903 ) was apparently based on quot. 1867 (in this note), which ultimately reflects an entry in L. Nowell's Vocabularium Saxonicum (see quot. a1567). However, the word is not attested in extant Old English sources and Nowell's entry is probably an error resulting from miscopying of a glossary entry such as that in quot. OE, which shows Old English flotmann sailor, pirate, viking:OE Ælfric Gloss. (St. John's Oxf.) 302 Pirata, wicing oððe flotman.a1567 L. Nowell Vocabularium Saxonicum (1952) 117/1 Lotman, a pyrate.1867 W. H. Smyth & E. Belcher Sailor's Word-bk. 457 Lotman, an old term for pirate.
Now historical and rare.
