单词 lucarne
释义

lucarnen.

/l(j)uːˈkɑːn/
Forms: α. 1500s lucane, lucayne, 1700s lucerne, 1800s lucarne. (See also luthern n.) β. corruptly1500s–1600s (?) leucomb, lucombe ( Arch. Publ. Soc. Dict.), 1600s lucome, luke-home, 1800s dialect lucam, lewcome. (See also E.D.D.)
Etymology: < Old French lucane, modern French lucarne, of obscure origin; compare Old French lucquet of similar meaning. Some scholars have suggested Old High German lukkâ opening (modern German lücke cavity, gap) as the source. Diez' proposal to connect the word with Latin lucerna (see lucerne n.1) is untenable.
An opening made in a roof to let in the light; a skylight, a dormer or garret window. (Now only as French.) Also lucarne window. In quot. 1793 the word appears to be misused.
