Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin auturgia (1513 or earlier), or its etymon (ii) Hellenistic Greek αὐτουργία personal labour (in ancient Greek already in sense ‘self-murder’ or ‘murder of kin’) < ancient Greek αὐτουργός working oneself ( < αὐτο- auto- comb. form1 + -ουργός : see -urgy comb. form) + -ία -y suffix3.With the α. forms compare nouns in -ergy , e.g. synergy n.
