Etymology: < Middle French, French auvergnat (adjective) of or relating to Auvergne (1572 or earlier), (noun) native or inhabitant of this region (ancient or modern) (1572 or earlier), variety of the Occitan language spoken in this region (late 18th cent.) < Auvergne, the name of a region of central France + -at, of uncertain origin. Compare (apparently with different suffixes) Old French, Middle French auvergnaz (13th cent. as auvrignace), Middle French auvergnas (14th cent., earliest as a surname), auvergnac (1455, earliest as a surname), Old Occitan auvergnas.The name of Auvergne is ultimately derived from classical Latin Arverni, the name of an ancient Gaulish people living in the region.
