Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Lovat.
Etymology: < Lovat, the title of the Lords (later Barons) Lovat of Beaufort Castle, Beauly, Inverness-shire. The creation of the tweed is attributed to Thomas Alexander Frazer (1802–75), 12th Lord Lovat and 1st Baron Lovat (see E. S. Harrison Scottish District Checks (1968) 22, 59).

1. Designating a type of tweed or a garment made of this; (also) designating a muted shade of a colour characteristic of this tweed, or something having this colour. Frequently in Lovat green, Lovat tweed. Lovat mixture n. a variegated tweed cloth of subdued browns, blues, and yellows; the colour of this cloth.
