Forms: 1800s– maa, 1900s– mah; Scottish 1700s may, 1700s–1800s mae, 1800s maie, 1800s mey, 1800s– maa; also Irish English (northern) 1800s– may. Forms with a occurring three or more times are also occasionally attested.
Origin: An imitative or expressive formation.
Etymology: Imitative. Compare mae n., mehh int., and baa v. Surv. Eng. Dial. records forms with /ɑː/ from Berkshire. Compare note at mehh int.
A. v.
intransitive. Of a sheep or lamb: to utter its distinctive cry; to bleat. Also of a goat. Of a person: to make a noise in imitation of the sound made by a sheep or a goat.
