Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish Macarena.
Etymology: Apparently < Macarena, the title of a song by the Spanish duo (from Seville) ‘Los del Río’, originally released in 1993 but gaining widespread success in 1995–6; the song's lyrics describe a girl called Macarena (a popular forename).
A dance consisting of set movements performed to a fast Latin rhythm.
