Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: lucken adj., gollan n.; lucken adj., gowan n.
Etymology: In α. forms < lucken adj. + gollan n. In β. forms apparently < an alteration of lucken adj. + the plural of gollan n. In γ. forms < lucken adj. + gowan n. So called on account of the shape of the flower head whose petals curve inwards to form what appears to be a closed sphere.The nature of the alteration shown by the δ. forms is unclear. Forms in lock- apparently show alteration after lock v.1 (compare loken adj.).
Scottish and English regional (northern).
The globeflower, Trollius europaeus, whose petals form a compact round flower head.In quot. 1548, apparently by confusion: the marsh marigold, Caltha palustris.
