Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: love n.1, apple n.
Etymology: < love n.1 + apple n. Compare Middle French, French †pomme d'amour (1547 or earlier denoting the tomato, 19th cent. or earlier denoting the aubergine), post-classical Latin poma amoris (1597), amoris pomum (see quot. 1622), German Liebesapfel tomato (late 18th cent. or earlier; apparently earlier also Liebapfel (apparently 17th cent.)). With use in quot. 1578 compare raging apple n. at raging adj. and adv. Compounds.
Now chiefly historical.
The fruit of either of two plants of the genus Solanum: (originally) †aubergine, S. melongena (obsolete); (in later use) tomato, S. esculentum. Also: the plants bearing these fruits. Cf. apple of love n. at apple n. Phrases 3c.figurative in quot. 1812.
