Etymology: < love n.1 + in prep. + a adj. + mist n.1, in both senses so called on account of the feathery bracts surrounding the flowers. In β. forms < love n.1 + in prep. + the adj. + mist n.1 Compare German Liebe im Nebel (19th cent. or earlier, in sense 1).
1. A West Indian passion flower, Passiflora foetida, having white flowers surrounded by feathery bracts. Now rare.
