Apparently < love n.¹ + a second element probably borrowed < Middle Dutch coop trade, purchase (compare later cope n.³ and cope v.³), perhaps after Middle Dutch lijfcoop earnest money, although compare also Middle Dutch lōven to recommend or offer (merchandise) for sale, to approve, to permit, to promise, to stand surety for (see love v.²). The form lufcoup in quot. 1299 could also suggest an early Scandinavian model (compare coup v.¹).For differing interpretations of the word see Brit.
