单词 luftmensch
释义

luftmenschn.

Brit. /ˈlʊftmɛnʃ/, U.S. /ˈlʊftˌmɛn(t)ʃ/
Inflections: Plural luftmenschen.
Forms: 1900s– luftmensch, 1900s– luftmensh, 1900s– luftmentsch, 1900s– luftmentsh. Also with capital initial.
Origin: A borrowing from Yiddish. Etymon: Yiddish luftmentsh.
Etymology: < Yiddish luftmentsh < luft air ( < Middle High German luft : see lift n.1) + mentsh person, human being ( < Middle High German mensch : see mannish n.).Compare German Luftmensch (1901 in this sense, in an address by Max Nordau at a Zionist congress ( < Yiddish); 18th cent. or earlier in texts by non-Jews in the sense ‘person whose temperament is associated with the air (in the ancient four-elements hypothesis of air, earth, fire, and water)’, 1815 or earlier in the sense ‘sylph’). Nordau is sometimes credited with first using the German word, but it is more likely that he merely popularized a term that was already being used orally in the specific sense. In plural form luftmenschen after the Yiddish plural form luftmentshn; compare also the German plural form Luftmenschen.
Chiefly in Jewish usage: a person who indulges in impractical or unrealistic plans; an impractical dreamer.
