Etymology: < the name of the town of Lyme, Connecticut, where an outbreak of the disease occurred in 1975.
Pathology.
Used attributively (esp. in Lyme arthritis or Lyme disease) and absol. to designate an infectious disease caused by the spirochaete Borrelia burgdorferi and transmitted by tick bites, with clinical manifestations including an initial erythematous rash, arthritis, and often neurological and cardiac abnormalities.
