Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is usually maintained on the first syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. lysolecithin n. Brit. /ˌlʌɪsə(ʊ)ˈlɛsᵻθ(ᵻ)n/, U.S. /ˌlaɪsəˈlɛsəθən/, /ˌlaɪsoʊˈlɛsəθən/.
a combining form of lysis n. (sense 3), used to form various biological and biochemical terms, as lysoˈlecithin n. Biochemistry any compound obtained from a lecithin by the hydrolytic removal of one of the two fatty acid groups.
