Etymology: < French lèse-nation (1780 or earlier) < lèse- (see lèse- comb. form) + nation nation n.1, after lèse-majesté lèse-majesté n. Compare earlier lèse-majesté n.
A crime against the state; treason. Cf. lèse-majesté n.Chiefly in the context of the French Revolution.
