Origin: Probably a borrowing from French. Or perhaps a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: French loance ; allowance n.
Etymology: Probably partly < Anglo-Norman loance, lowance payment, reward (c1150 or earlier; < louer to hire, to rent (see lowage n.) + -ance -ance suffix), and partly aphetic < allowance n. Compare 'low v.3 and later low n.4
Now chiefly English regional.
An allowance; spec. a fixed portion of food or drink, or its equivalent in money, given in addition to wages.
