Origin: A borrowing from Portuguese. Etymon: Portuguese macau.
Etymology: < Portuguese †macau (now only in arara-macau red macaw), of uncertain origin; compare Tupi macauaná.Compare Spanish ‘máca, a Bird in the Province of Quito, in South-America, less than our Cocks, with a long Bill Red and Yellow, and its Feathers of such Variety of Colours as is admirable’ (P. Pineda New Dict., Spanish & Eng. (1740)).

Origin: Of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; compare Arawak mocaya, macoya macaw-palm, also Tupi macá palm.
Any of various spiny-stemmed palms of the tropical American genera Acrocomia and Aiphanes, as found in the Caribbean; esp. Acrocomia aculeata and Aiphanes minima. Now only in fuller form macaw palm, macaw tree. Formerly also: †the fruit of any of these palms (more fully macaw-berry) (obsolete).
