Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin macellārius , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin macellārius of or concerned with provisions ( < macellum provision-market + -ārius -ary suffix1; compare Hellenistic Greek μακελλάριος) + -ous suffix. Classical Latin macellum is probably < Hellenistic Greek μάκελλος market, ancient Greek μάκελλον enclosure, perhaps ultimately of Semitic origin.For post-classical Latin macellarius in the spec. sense ‘butcher’, reflected in Blount's use, see etymological note s.v. massacre n. N.E.D. (1904) indicates the stress as maceˈllarious.
Obsolete. rare.
Of or relating to a meat market or shambles.
