Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French machicouler; French machecolle.
Etymology: Either < Middle French machicouler to equip with machicolations (1358), or independently < the corresponding Anglo-Norman noun machecolle (1381; compare Middle French machicop (1358)); probably ultimately < Old French macher (French mâcher ) to crush (see discussion s.v. mackerel n.1) + col neck (see col n.1). Compare post-classical Latin machicolamentum (1346), machecollum (from 1370 in British sources), and the corresponding verb machecollare (from 1433 in British sources), machicollare (1449); also Middle French machecoleis (1404; > French mâchicoulis machicoulis n.), Old Occitan machacol (c1359).With β. forms compare post-classical Latin mascalcionum machicolation (1547 in a British source).
Obsolete.
transitive. To machicolate. Chiefly in past participle.
