Etymology: < French abirritation (1822 or earlier) < ab- ab- prefix + irritation irritation n.Quot. 1823 is from a review of F.-G. Boisseau Pyrétologie physiologique (1823). N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (æbˌi:ritēi·ʃən) /æbˌɪrɪˈteɪʃən/.
Medicine. Obsolete.
Diminished irritability or vitality of tissue.

1823 London Med. Repository 19 50 M. B. [= M. Boisseau] has viewed irritation as presenting four degrees of intensity; and abirritation, or asthenia, as being that of function and of nutrition.
1827 Medico-chirurg. Rev., & Jrnl. Pract. Med. 7 64 Defective respiration is the most powerful cause of debility:—it produces necessarily abirritation (defective irritability,) but sometimes this is preceded by irritation.
