Etymology: Probably < Anglo-Norman and Middle French mayndefer (late 14th cent.; < main hand (see main n.³) + de de prep. + fer iron: see ferraunt adj.), although this appears to have denoted primarily a hook used to draw an opponent closer in combat; forms without de appear to be attested in French only in modern historical writers. Compare post-classical Latin manicule ferree gauntlets (1303 in a British source), classical Latin manus ferrea grappling-iron.Quot. 1786 depends on a false etymology < mane n.¹
