单词 mainfaire
释义

mainfairen.

Brit. /ˈmeɪnfɛə/, U.S. /ˈmeɪnfɛr/
Forms: late Middle English maynefere, late Middle English maynfer, 1500s mainferre, 1500s manufier, 1600s mainefaire, 1600s mainefeere, 1600s mainfare, 1600s manifeer, 1600s– mainfer, 1700s–1800s manefaire, 1700s–1800s manifaire, 1900s– mainfaire, 1900s– manifer.
Origin: Probably a borrowing from French. Etymon: French mayndefer.
Etymology: Probably < Anglo-Norman and Middle French mayndefer (late 14th cent.; < main hand (see main n.3) + de de prep. + fer iron: see ferraunt adj.), although this appears to have denoted primarily a hook used to draw an opponent closer in combat; forms without de appear to be attested in French only in modern historical writers. Compare post-classical Latin manicule ferree gauntlets (1303 in a British source), classical Latin manus ferrea grappling-iron.Quot. 1786 depends on a false etymology < mane n.1
Now historical.
A large rigid gauntlet worn on the bridle hand (i.e. the left hand) in tournaments, from the 14th to the 17th cent. Also [mistakenly applied: this use is not found before Grose] : = crinière n.
