Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin magnificāt- , magnificāre , -ive suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin magnificāt-, past participial stem of magnificāre (see magnificate v.) + -ive suffix. Compare post-classical Latin magnificativus (13th cent. in a British source as a rhetorical term). N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (mægni·fikătiv) /mæɡˈnɪfɪkətɪv/.
