Origin: A borrowing from Swahili. Etymon: Swahili -machinga.
Etymology: < Swahili -machinga (singular mmachinga, plural wamachinga) (late 20th cent.) < -machinga, denoting a small ethnic group living on the coast in southern Tanzania, whose members often worked in the cities as itinerant traders (singular Mmachinga, plural Wamachinga).
Tanzanian English.
A street vendor; a hawker.
