Etymology: < post-classical Latin macilentia leanness (8th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin macilentus macilent adj. + -ia -ia suffix1; compare -ence suffix. Compare French macilence (1611). The 15th-cent. and 19th-cent. quots. doubtless represent independent uses; in the intervening period macilency n. was the usual word. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (mæ·silĕns) /ˈmæsɪləns/.
