Origin: Perhaps of multiple origins. Probably partly a borrowing from Early Irish. Perhaps partly a borrowing from Scottish Gaelic. Etymons: Early Irish mac(c)slabrae; Scottish Gaelic macaladh.
Etymology: Of Celtic origin: in forms makhelve , etc., probably ultimately < Early Irish mac(c)slabrae ‘son-cattle, son-dowry’ < macc son (see Mac n.1) + slabrae stock, dowry; in forms mackallow, etc., perhaps independently from or after Scottish Gaelic macaladh fostering < mac son + àlaich nourish, nurse (compare Early Irish ailid nourishes, rears, fosters).
Scottish. Obsolete.
An allocation of cattle which is entrusted to a foster-parent, to be maintained for the benefit of the foster-child.
