单词 many-roots
释义

many-rootsn.

Brit. /ˈmɛnɪruːts/, U.S. /ˈmɛniˌruts/, Caribbean English /ˈmɛniˌruːts/
Forms: 1700s– many-roots, 1800s– many-root, 1900s– minnie roots Caribbean English /ˈmɪniruts/.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: many adj., root n.1
Etymology: < many adj. + the plural of root n.1 Dict. Caribbean Eng. Usage (1996) enters the word under the form minnie-roots , and connects it etymologically with the first element of menow weed n. However, the variant with min- in the first syllable appears to be of late appearance and relatively limited distribution, and a literal interpretation of the name many-roots is consistent with the plant's appearance.
Caribbean.
An erect weed, Ruellia tuberosa (family Acanthaceae), native to the West Indies and northern South America. Also called duppy gun, and (formerly) menow weed, spirit leaf. This plant has bluish funnel-shaped flowers, pods that burst explosively when damp, and multiple tuberous roots that are used medicinally.
