单词 mackninny
释义

mackninnyn.

Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: Mac n.1, ninny n.1
Etymology: < Mac n.1 + ninny n.1, i.e. ‘son of Ninny (Charles I)’. Compare the title of Dryden's poem Mac Flecknoe (1682).The attribution of the name to the Protestant joiner and political speaker Stephen College (see quot. 1681) is supported by Impartial Acct. Arraignment Stephen Colledge (1682) 26 ‘Asking him, what he meant by Rowley, he said, It was the King, and Mac the Duke of York’, but appears not to be substantiated by any of College's surviving works. Quot. a1734 has previously (as in N.E.D. (1904) s.v.) been taken to refer to some sort of puppet-show, and derived in a spurious etymology from Italian macchinine, plural of a diminutive of macchina machine. N.E.D. (1904) indicates the stress as mackˈninny.
Obsolete.
A disparaging name for: King James II (reigned 1685–8). Also in extended use.
