Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek μακρόβιος , -an suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek μακρόβιος long-lived ( < μακρός macro- comb. form + βίος life: see bio- comb. form) + -an suffix.In quot. 1694 rendering Middle French Macrobe , and in quot. 1860 probably classical Latin macrobii, both ultimately from Greek μακρόβιος.
