Nautical.
A type of knot tied with two round turns and a half hitch, and used typically to bind a rope to a spar, a ring, or the shackle of an anchor.Largely synonymous with rolling hitch (see rolling adj. and adv. Compounds 1), now the more usual term; for a slight distinction in meaning see the note there.

1873 ‘Vanderdecken’ Yachts & Yachting vii. 70 A Magnus Hitch is made on the shackle of an anchor, a spar, or a rope, by taking two round turns round the ring or spar, passing the end over the standing part of the line, round the ring, or rope again, and up through the bight.
1944 C. W. Ashley Ashley Bk. Knots xviii. 265 The Rolling Hitch was formerly called Magnus Hitch and Magner's Hitch. If the latter is correct, Mr. Magner is the only rival that Matthew Walker has. Of the latter, it has been said that he is ‘the only man to have a Knot named for him’.
