Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French magot.
Etymology: < Middle French, French magot (1500; late 15th cent. as magos , plural), probably alteration of the biblical name Magog (see Gogmagog n.): see further Trésor de la langue française (at cited word). Sense 2 (mid 18th cent. in French, although late 17th cent. in form magau) is best explained as after a common extended sense in French, ‘an ugly person’.
