Origin: A borrowing from Hungarian. Etymon: Hungarian magyar.
Etymology: < Hungarian magyar. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (ma·dyar) /ˈmadjar/); the digraph gy in Hungarian represents the voiced palatal plosive ɟ, whose closest equivalent in English is // or /-dj-/. The usual modern English pronunciation is a spelling-pronunciation. French similarly has pronunciations with /ɡj/ as well as with /ʒj/ in this word, while German has /dj/.
