Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Xhosa. Partly a borrowing from Zulu. Etymons: Xhosa amarewu; Zulu amahewu.
Etymology: Partly < Xhosa amarewu (r = /x/) and partly < Zulu amahewu.Forms with ama- sometimes occur in English contexts. The forms with -g- are perhaps influenced by Afrikaans magou (also (rare) magêo, magêou, marewu).
South African.
A non-alcoholic home-brewed drink made of thin, slightly fermented maize-meal porridge, often with wheat flour added; a similar, commercially manufactured drink sold in cartons, or in the form of an instant ready-mix.
