Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Macrocystis.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Macrocystis (C. A. Agardh Species algarum (1821) I. i. 46) < macro- macro- comb. form + ancient Greek κύστις bladder (see cyst n.).
A genus of brown algae of which the only species now recognized is Macrocystis pyrifera, a giant kelp which is widespread in the southern hemisphere and along the Pacific coast of America; an alga of this genus.
