Etymology: < French macrodactyle (1817 in Cuvier, 1816 in Vieillot) < scientific Latin Macrodactylus (J. K. W. Illiger Prodromus systematis mammalium et avium (1811) 264) < ancient Greek μακροδάκτυλος < μακρός macro- comb. form + δάκτυλος finger, toe (see dactyl n.). Compare earlier macrodactylic adj.
Zoology. Obsolete. rare.

A member of the former group Macrodactyli of wading birds (including jacanas and rails), characterized by long unwebbed toes.
