Etymology: < scientific Latin Macropodidae, family name (J. E. Gray 1821, in London Med. Repository 15 308) < *Macropod- , taken as stem (after ancient Greek ποδ- , πούς foot: see -pod comb. form) of Macropus , genus name (G. Shaw Vivarium Naturæ (1790) I. sig. O2; < macro- macro- comb. form + ancient Greek πούς ) + -idae (see -id suffix3). Compare earlier macropod n. and adj.
