Close inspection shows that the limb over the polar caps is composed of a nearly continuous band of jets, either pointed or cylindrical, ranging in length from less than ∼5″ to more than 60″. Because of their size compared to the well-known Hα spicules, we have chosen to call these features macrospicules.
